Anthem, Chapter 9, Morality

In this chapter, Equality questions the morality of his former society. Contrast what he was previously taught about solitude, good, evil, and joy to what he now believes.

  1. Everything is flip-flopped. What was good is bad, what was bad is good. Individuality is a good thing, not bad. It lets you express yourself, keeps you from going insane. When Equality finally leaves, he becomes free, all the oppression from his former society is gone. Saying "I" is not punishable by death, loving the opposite gender is not a crime, being yourself is good!

  2. He was taught that solitude was an evil thing, and that it was an unforgivable offense. He was taught that good was only done by serving his brothers. To stand alone and be an individual was an evil thing. He was taught that joy could only come to him when serving his brothers. Now, he believes solitude is a beautiful thing. His views on good and evil have been reversed. He believes the individual is a good thing, and the herd-like society is evil. He thinks joy now comes from being an individual.

  3. Equality was first taught that "we" was all there was to the world. If they had any selfish thoughts it was considered evil. If anyone went against their brothers it was considered evil. The only thing that was good was to love everything equally and not love anything above anything else. They were also taught that solitude was evil. Equality escaped to the uncharted forest and the Golden ones followed and that's when they started to realize what really went on in the unmentionable times. They discovered the word "I". When they discovered this they became they're own people and realized its okay to be alone and love someone more than others. Discovering "I" is what set them free from their brothers.

  5. When Equality lived with all their brothers they were taught to really not have joy, to fake being happy. To do everything for your brothers and not to complain. They only lived part of life. Now that they live in the Uncharted Forrest they are happy he believes every man should be free to choose what they want to do like the people in the Unspeakable times. He does not think all things are evil like he once believed

  6. Equality was previously taught that it was bad to think of women, that it was bad to go against the council. Also what was good to them was that they had to follow every order that the councils said and that it is only a good thing to serve their brothers. They were taught to become one. Now, they believe everything opposite of what people had taught them to believe. What the rest of the brothers thought was bad is now okay with equality they embrace women they saw their own reflection. What they thought was bad is now good to them.

  7. Solitude, good, evil, and joy were things that he thought about and questioned quite often. For example if he was doing thhe right thing or not. Now that he is in the uncharted forest none of that matters to him, he is free from all the people judging him as well as his group. All that matters to him now is surviving and taking life day by day in the forest. He is on his own opinion and ideas now. Everything that was bad for him to do in society is what he enjoys doing now that he is away from all that and in the unchanted forest.

  8. I think Equality's mindset is totally different. He seems to realize that there is freedom in the life he now lives. He realizes that the bondage he once had is no longer there and that he can therefore have his own opinion. The "good" and "evil" that once existed are no longer grasping his morals. He now lives a life in which he can love another person. This is the biggest change in my opinion. He can care for someone without breaking the laws. The ability to love came naturally to him based on the fact that he has nothing holding him back. He can find joy in his freedom instead of only finding satisfaction in the work he was able to do in order to please the law makers, he can find satisfaction in the things of his world and the laws he wants to have.

  9. Equality has finally seemed to turn a complete 180 from his former life back in the society he once was a part of. He has come to believe that solitude is nothing compared what the Council has taught them about it. He and the Golden One have finally found solitude, and find it to be wonderful. It is not "evil" as the Council said it to be; rather, it is good. This leads Equality to question what is good and what is evil. If solitude is evil, then why are they so happy? If they are filled with joy in their solitude, why is this so? Equality continues to wonder about this and goes forth in his new life with the Golden One.

  10. He was taught that what was evil is good and vis versa, he was taught that serving for the others was what the "right" thing to do. Everything was switched. But since he escaped and now knows what great things solitude can and have done for him. Loving the opposite gender is great and freedom is healthy.

  11. Previouly they had never known "what joy is possible to men." They realized that it was okay to be happy and now know that the dont need to be ashamed of what they have done in the past.

  12. Equality was taught that they could only experience joy with their brothers, good was anything that their brothers agreed with, evil was things against what the brothers believed and now Equality believes that joy could be experienced without their brothers and evil to them was good

  13. In Anthem, Equatilty is taught that solitude is evil, and doing evil is not tolerated. To be good is to serve others, joy is an inevitable feeling. In his new life style he sees that his old society is the evil in the world and being your own person in the way to live a joyous life.

  14. Before he committed his "sins" Equality's former society has taught him that solitude is not allowed because they believe in being united as one not individuals. What they taught to be good was doing anything to benefit the society not themselves and so it was wrong to do your own thing that you please and that was considered evil. His society also taught that joy should not come from self benefits but from the society as one. Now that they have ran away they now have no orders to follow so they feel free and are starting to realize all they have been taught were wrong. They are starting to see why it's the opposite.

  15. Some times to them they felt guiltty to be happy. They were full of lies since the very beginning. So they know that it was badd but they haappy about it.

  16. Before he left he was taught that individuality and solitude were evil. He was told it was wrong to feel joy for himself. He was taught that feeling happiness for no reason was a sin. Now that he's alone he believes that everything he knew before was wrong. He doens't want to share anything he has with his "brothers" and he works only for his own benifit. He's happy for himself now.

  17. Equality was taught all the things that were not true. Everything he thought he knew really was the opposite of the truth. Say for instance that the good was actually bad and the bad was good. All the morals that people used to be taught were changed in the asylum.

  18. He was taught that solitude is bad, that men must toil for the good of their brothers, otherwise they are being evil.

  19. In Anthem, Equality is taught that solitude is evil. His society taught him what he thinks is evil now. He believes the opposite of what he was taught and once believed

  20. Equality was taught being an individual was a bad thing. What he once thought was good, is now bad. He is being an individual, which is something that is good now not bad. He was used to just being like everyone else serving his brothers.

  21. Equality thought good only came from serving his brothers/others, and joy could only come by doing so. To be his true self was evil, and he thought he needed to be someone he wasn't. Equality also thought solitude was an evil thing.
Now, Equality thinks opposite of everything. Solitude isn't evil and that it's beautiful, he can now be his true self because it's joyous.

  22. Equality was taught to believe that what you did alone was evil and that solitude in itself is evil. He was also taught that everything in the past before the time that this group took over was evil. He was taught that everything that was done collectively was good and that you were only supposed to do things that your brothers required. Now, he has realized that things done just for the sake of it and not out of obligation to others and the need to survive is good and joyous and fun. He's realized that being with one person forever and thinking higher of them than the others is not evil, but an okay thing. He's realized that almost everything he's been taught is completely opposite than what it really is.

  23. Since Equality has moved into the forest he has seen how free he actually is. When he was in the City he was always taught that being expressive or knowing much more than his brothers was evil. Now that he is in the forest he does not have that strict law put on him. Its the complete opposite in the forest. In the forest he can go against the law, and express himself with now doubts or punishment.

  24. Equality was taught to that solitude was a bad thing, and individuality was not the way to live. Now that he has stopped being a follower like the rest of the society, he understands that being joyful and good can bring true happiness. He thinks the opposite of his society now.

  25. Equality questions the morality for the first time in his life because he has never been alone before. He previously thought that solitude was bad, good is not being unique, that evil was anything that wasn't acceepted by everyone, and there was no such thing as joy. Equality realized that his society, actually his whole life, is a lie. Everything he's been told is completely opposite to what he thinks now.

  26. He was taught that everything that was against his fellow men was evil. He couldn't have his own thoughts or ideas. None of them had any rights. Now he knows that he can make his own decisions.

  27. His eyes have finally been opened. He realizes that all the "wrong" things are the rights things to enjoy one's freedom.

  28. Equality was taught to let the society know that everyone should be treated equal. To let them know that there's good in their brothers and everyone else.

  29. In Equality society, they were taught not to think by themselves. They are supposed to listen and obey. To think of themselves and other things beside their brothers is a crime and a sin. Their joy is to be with their brothers. However, Equality learned that to put himself before their brothers is not sinful. Joy is to learn, to create. He also learned about individualism.

  30. Equality was taught that being an individual was a bad thing and that everyone had to be the same. There society took it to the extreme that they did not even know what they looked like, or even cared. Now that they are living with the Golden Ones and are free, they have learned to be themselves. Equality is now happy and calm in there environment. So everything in there past society was completely flipped around and backwards.

  31. Orginally, solitude was like keeping to himself and no interaction with others for Equality. Good was obeying the Councils every word, and evil was doing the exact opposite; it was disobeying. Also, there was simply no joy what so ever in Equality's old society. Now that he has ran away, and almost to a point of broken free from his old society, his eyes have been opened. Talking to the Golden One is far better than being in solitude. And good is now simply being happy and evil is now what punishment was back in society. And joy is finally being felt. Just by laughing, smiling, talking, and being with the Golden One.

  32. Before his current condition, Equality was taught that love and to love is evil. Now that he feels love toward Liberty, or, "Golden One", he questions how something that feels so pure can be wrong. He's starting to learn what true freedom is and with individualism comes freedom. Before, individualism was deemed immoral and wrong. Simply smiling or laughing without reason was frowned upon. Equality finds joy in his new life and is starting to realize that it isn't so wrong and the world before was most likely like the way he is living now.

  33. Equality was taught to serve others and not to complain. he never really knew how to be happy. but know that he lives in the forrest he can beleive in what he wants without being judged. he doesnt think all things are evil like he used to, he has a new outlook on life.
