Anthem - Palace of Corrective Detention

The old locks and lack of guards in the Palace of Corrective Detention indicate that prisioners never tried to escape. Why not?

  1. I think that the government, or council has such power over the people that they are fearful of them. If they were put in the Palace of Corrective Detention then they most likely did something to bring shame upon themselves, and were scared at what the next step in punishment could be.

  2. Prisoners never tried to escape, because they never thought about it, the mentally ill only accepted that they could not do anything about there punishment.

  3. The people in this book are beaten down everyday by others. Verbally. They never fight that, so why should they fight this? This kind of abuse is physical but it has to hurt just as much as their everyday life when they are told they can't have a personality and are nothing compared to the whole of their brothers. There's really no difference. They probably never try to escape because they are so brain washed that they believe they deserve the beating.
Or maybe they are looking at it as an escape. If they don't survive this, they won't have to go back to their horrible life.

  4. The prisoners might of been to scared to escape or they couldn't think of a way to escape.

  5. I think previous prisoners never tried to escape because it never crossed their minds. In this book it is a very peaceful and obediant society. Most of the brothers think the same but Equality 7-2521 is not the average group. They think differently with their heads and hearts

  6. They never tried to escape because it never crossed their mind. The herd mentality was so dug in that they just accepted their fate and let their punishment go on. They thought trying to escape would be an unspeakable offense.

  7. Prisoners don't try to escape because once they're in the the Palace of Corrective Detention their usually so badly beaten to the point where it would be hard to even have the energy to move or they were just too afraid to even try to do anything that's what i personally think why they don't have much guards in the Palace of Corrective Detention.

  8. The prisoner all their lives not to disobey the Council of Scholars, and they knew the concequences that would await them and were tterrified.

  9. Prisoners did not try to escape because they were so ashamed of going against their brothers. Also they probably could not find a way to escape.

  10. I think the prisoners never escaped because the palace ruler had so much power they were fearfull of what might happen to them if they were caught escaping. Their minds were just set to what the consequences were and not how easily it would be to get out

I don't believe this is a very peaceful society.
Peaceful to me means you don't want to cause harm.
In this book, they are afraid to cause harm because if they mess up, they are sure to get hurt.

  12. I agree with Spencer and Paige to a certain extent. The thoughts may have simply never entered the minds of the prisoners. All the work they have to do is a constant repartition, and because they have such a scheduled day they possibly could be brain washed beyond belief and never want to go against the flow of things that are "normal" in their society.

  13. The other prisoners did not escape probably because they were not brave enough as the Equality 7-2521. Also, the Equality 7-2521 were determined to show The Council of Scholars their glass box. The previous men that have been in the Palace of Corrective Detention had nothing to look forward to really at all if they were to escape. Another reason would be just the thought of getting caught and the punishment they would receive but the Equality 7-2521 thought it was well worth the risk.

  14. The inmates at the Detention Palace probably never tried to escape because they know that the Council will probably have the people who escaped or tried to escape severely beaten are put to death. Some of the prisoners at the Detention Palace probably also think that being there is a lot better than their daily life that they're forced to live.

  15. I think that the prisoners were afraid that the government would punish them worse than they already have. Also they probably have never thought of escaping because of the way they have been taught to think.

  16. Most people probably have not attempted to escape because they fear the government. People have been killed for speaking a simple word, so why wouldn't they be fearful? They could also enjoy their perfect world and just not even think of ruining that because it is what they have been taught.

  17. The way that they have to live makes them ashamed of themselves when they are told that they have done something wrong. Whenever they get sent to corrective detention they probably believe that they deserve it even if they don't understand why they're there. They probably don't want to escape.

  18. I don't think they were needed very often. Most of the people in the Palace of Corrective Detention are not in the Palace very long. Unlike what Equality did, most people would just tell them what they did, where they were, and were let out, to be punished later.

  19. When the punishment before the prisoner was put into prison was such a brutal beating, the only thing worse is death. Many of the people in this time could not think for themselves, since that's how they were raised. Even without the ability to think for themselves, they had to know that death was not a very appealing option.

  20. The prisoners never tried to escape because they weren't brave enough and I don't think it ever crossed their mind. If they would have escaped, the punishment would have been much greater then they one they were currently serving at the Palace of Corrective Detention.

  21. People do not escape because they truly fear the council. And the council is fully aware that the people are araid of them. The council basically uses fear to get their point across. The brothers know that the council is harsh, and that any crime commited has consequenses in the end.

  22. In their society, all men behaved the same. They think that if they are in prison, then they deserve to be there. They think that their council of leaders is always right, and would not do anything to disobey them.

  23. If I were in their shoes, I would NOT try to escape. Many punishments are extreme enough, why escape if there is a chance of getting caught and being put to death or earning more lashes?? It's human nature to stay away from pain and keep ourselves out of pain's reach. Think about it, a person there was burned alive by breaking some insane law. I imagine the consequences for escaping would be far worse, if worse is possible!

  24. I think they prisoners were to scared to escape. they had seen punishment for the bad things they had already done and did not want to find out what would happen if they tried to escape. i do think the authorities over them and kinda brain washed their thinking as well.

  25. The way that they were brainwashed, it never entered their mind to escape. Also, the intimidation of getting punished if they get caught when they escaped probably played a role in them not escaping.

  26. The reason that prisoners never tried to escape is because it's the way they was educated. People in Equality society know that they have to obey. They have to listen and do exactly what the Council say, and whatever the Council said then it is final.

  27. The prisoners never tried to escape because this is something that would be pointless. The prisoners have nothing else to live for. They do not have any reason to escape.

  28. I believe that what Paige said was very accurate and a good answer to the question. Also it seemed very well thought out.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The reason in which they did not escape is because their name and which group they were in is listed at the head of the society. So if they tried to escaped the guards would just find them and beat them over and over again. So there would be no point in escaping.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The government controlled all aspects of how the men thought, and escaping was not implanted into their minds. Also, they were fearful of what could happen if they did.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No man tried to escape because there was no point of trying. If the prisoners tried to run from the Palace of Corrective Detention they would be caught and punished. The abuse was already unbearable, if they were discovered the goverment would do horrible things to the prisoners, at that was something they greatly feared.

  32. I believe that the prsions were to scared of the thought of what might happen nif the ytried to escape. They already did something foolish to be put in there so the consequences of what would happen if they were to do something again would be to much to with stand.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Probably because the prisoners are too afraid of being caught.Since they all live in a society where they are very strict. Who knows what could happen to them. their punishment could be bad.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The prisoners of The Palace of Corrective Detention never attempted an escape nor did The Council take precautions to prevent an escape because the men of Equality's society had been brain-washed into believing lies. Men were taught never to think for themselves, and that whatever The Council ordered was meant to be obeyed, no questions asked. Because of this strict obedience training, The Council thought that no man would dare defy an order. Therefore, no man would dare break out of the Palace of Corrective Detention.

  35. I believe the main reason why the people of their society don't attempt to escape from the prisons is because the way they have been educated. The councils have basically brain washed them and raised them to become very obedient. They are also very fearful of the punishments. For example that one person who was burnt to death. Everyone was there to witness it. The councils wanted the civilians to see it and show them what happens if they disobey.

  36. Because the Council has put so much fear into the minds of the citizens and had made very clear that punishment for any offense is severe, no one dared to disobey. So if one was imprisoned, they would not dare escape. "For men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be",-Equality 7-2521.

  37. no man tried to escape because there was no use in trying because if they did escape successfully they would be caught and punished for it. they had to witness each others punishments because the guards thought thats how they would learn. so they were fearful.
